Take time to answer these five important home security questions to help determine if your home is secure.
1. Do you have working deadbolt locks on all exterior doors, including your garage door?
2. Do you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms? Are they monitored around the clock?
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly and replace batteries as needed.Monitored smoke and carbon monoxide alarms can offer alerts and fast response to fire, smoke and high levels of carbon monoxide.
3. Is your house number prominently displayed?
- Your house number should be prominently displayed to make sure first responders and emergency personnel can find your house if a residential alarm is triggered.
4. Do you have a fire extinguisher in your home?
- Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher listed by a nationally accepted testing laboratory, such as Underwriter's Laboratories (UL) or Factory Mutual (FM). Keep your fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location.
5. Is your home well-lit? Do you have motion sensor lighting near doors and windows?
- Keeping your home well-lit and installing motion sensor lighting makes it harder for burglars to operate undetected. Motion sensor lights can also help alert you to movement on or near your property.
Here are just 5 small things you can check to begin making your home more safe, and secure. Until next time:
